Readings for a Birth or Naming Ceremony

A Child Was Born This Day

Ms Susan Fariss

A child was born this day
in a moment of quiet
in a moment of strength
in a moment of sighs
in a moment of pain

A child was born this day
Glowing, pink, warm, crying
his mother reaching
loving her new child
against birth-tired skin

A child was born this day
And God rejoiced
danced, white robe and hair flying,
laughing, crying,
singing songs of praise

A child was born this day
and that child was you

Welcome to the world
Rejoice, sing, laugh, love, play
for this is your day
and it is time to celebrate
Happy Birthday

By Michael Leunig (Australian philosopher/cartoonist extraodinaire)

God be with the mother.
As she carried her child,
may she carry her soul.
As her child was born,
may she give birth and life and form to her own, higher truth.
As she nourished and protected her child,
may she nourish and protect her inner life and her independence.
For her soul shall be her most painful birth, her most difficult child,
and the dearest sister to her other children.

Tao de Ching, Bk 2, Ch 64,  6BC

A tree that grows beyond your reach
springs from a tiny seed,
A building more than nine storeys high
rises from a handful of earth,
A journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single step.
